  14. X-Master is a Newton utility which allows you to quickly and easily launch
  15. applets, books, and built-in functions without ever opening the Extras drawer.
  16. It is unobtrusive and simple to use.  X-Master's basic design is similar to
  17. launching utilities such as Now Utilities NowMenus™ for the Macintosh which
  18. provides a popdown list of applications and documents to open.
  19.  
  20. INSTALLING X-MASTER: Use the Newton Connection Kit or Package Installer utility
  21. to load the package into your Newton.  X-Master is small (roughly 12K) and
  22. therefore can be loaded into either internal memory or onto a storage card.
  23.  
  24. After installation, you will see a small dot in the upper right hand corner of
  25. your screen.  The position (left or right side) of the dot is user configurable
  26. as described below.  X-Master will automatically restart itself after resets or
  27. card swaps from this point on.
  28.  
  29. USING X-MASTER: X-Master is easy to use.  Simply tapping on the dot will display
  30. a popdown menu of all the USER INSTALLED applets and Newton Books in alphabetical
  31. order.  Selecting an item from the list will open that app or book (or, if the
  32. app is already open, it will be closed).  To open BUILT-IN FUNCTIONS (eg., In
  33. Box, Prefs, Time Zones, Styles, etc.), touch the dot and hold for about 2
  34. seconds. At that point you will hear a beep.  Lift the stylus from the dot and a
  35. popdown list of the BUILT-IN apps will appear.  Selecting from this list will
  36. launch the desired function.  In either case, simply clicking anywhere outside
  37. the popdown list will dismiss the menu.

  39. Since X-Master lists the USER INSTALLED apps separately, there is room for a
  40. total of 25 items in the popdown menu, which amounts to 5 more than can
  41. currently be displayed in the extras drawer.  Installing X-Master in the
  42. internal memory will keep its icon visible at all times.  If you decide to
  43. install it on your memory card, load it before other apps in order to maintain
  44. its position early in the extras drawer list.

  46. If you install X-Master on your storage card and try to remove the card while
  47. X-Master is OPEN, the Newton will ask for the card back.  This will occur with
  48. any Newton program that is running from an ejected card.  To safely remove the
  49. card, simply select X-Master from the popdown list or tap its icon in the extras
  50. drawer to toggle it closed.  Then the card can be removed.  X-Master will
  51. automatically reopen itself when the card is placed back into a Newton.

  53. X-Master has been tested on an MP Classic, 100, and 110 with no problems noted
  54. over the last month even from early development versions. However, in the
  55. rapidly changing Newton world, it's difficult to test for all possible
  56. situations.  As always, one should back up your machine before trying out new
  57. software.

  59. SETTING USER PREFERENCES & ABOUT X-MASTER: X-Master allows a user to set the
  60. side in which it appears to enhance ease of use for left handed Newton owners.
  61. To invoke the preferences dialog (which doubles as the About X-Master box), tap
  62. and hold your stylus on the dot.  After 2 seconds you will hear a beep. Continue
  63. holding for about 2 more seconds.  You will then hear a warble sound. Lift your
  64. stylus AFTER the second sound -- a dialog box will appear.  There are two radio
  65. buttons at the bottom of the dialog.  Select the desired display side.  You will
  66. see the X-Master dot move to the selected side.

  68. The dialog box also contains shareware information and eMail/Snail Mail
  69. addresses for the author.  Tapping on the Impossible Dreams Star logo will
  70. display acknowlegements to some special people.  Tapping the star again will
  71. toggle back to the original notice.  Tap on the close box to dismiss the dialog.

  73. HISTORY: As noted above, the inspiration for X-Master was from various launching
  74. utilities for the Macintosh.  Since I was the original author of MultiMaster, a
  75. launching utility published as part of Now Utilities 2.0x and 3.0x (and now
  76. incorporated into NowMenus of NU 4.0x), it wasn't too great a leap to put
  77. together something similar when I decided to learn how to program for the Newton
  78. platform.  I hope that you will find this little hack useful!

  87. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: As mentioned above, I got my start in the Mac programming
  88. world by writing a little hack that could launch programs under MultiFinder.
  89. This hack eventually grew to become MultiMaster.  Recently, most of my time has
  90. been occupied finishing my M.D.followed by Internal Medicine training at UC, San
  91. Francisco. I've since moved to Stanford University where I'm doing a Fellowship
  92. in Cardiology which not only includes clinical training, but also basic science
  93. research on the mechanisms and possible treatment of atherosclerosis (hardening
  94. of the arteries which can lead to heart attacks and strokes). The Newton
  95. technology has very clear application to all levels of the medical system from
  96. administration to "in-the-trenches" patient care.  At some point in the near
  97. future, I would like to become involved in medically related Newton projects
  98. either as a programmer or a consultant.  I'd love to hear from those with
  99. similar interests in applying Newton technology to the medical or scientific
  100. field.

  118. The number of applets X-Master can displaying is currently limited to the maximum
  119. size of a menu on a Newton screen.  This WILL be addressed soon.  Other
